Ashtanga Yoga is a set of sequential asanas developed by Pattabhi Jois, the guru of Ashtanga Yoga. It is the original form of power and vinyasa yoga. It is said Ashtanga Yoga originated from an ancient text called Yoga Korunta compiled by Vamana Rishi which Krishnamacharya received from his guru and passed onto Pattabhi Jois. Ashtanga Yoga, like all forms of Hatha, defer to Patanjali’s Ashtanga Yoga or Eight Limb Yoga System: yamas (self restraints), niyamas (self observances), asanas (postures), pranayama (regulation of prana through breath control), pratyahara (inward turning, turning away from the outside world), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation), samadhi (identification with pure consciousness). This system, along with the use of bandhas, drishti and mantras helps the sadhaka progress along the yogic path towards moksha or liberation.
